Eight

By mid-afternoon, Mary decided that she'd never worked so hard in her life. The man was stubborn. Killing the Santa Claus Killer might well be the end of her.

She'd pushed and prodded and badgered him into grudging cooperation. Then, finally, he bought into the idea that having a second Christmas morning with his son could help him successfully navigate the Santa Claus waters. Still, he resisted the cheer she was trying so hard to give him.

They negotiated the activities she had planned for the day throughout the gingerbread house assembly. That task took twice as long as usual because the man kept "accidentally" demolishing walls and eating the broken pieces. Nick Carstairs had quite the sweet tooth.

He resisted making a trip to the attic to unearth the Christmas decorations he'd buried there. However, the day was saved when Mary discovered the hot glue gun Nick and his son used for scout projects. A determined woman could do a lot of decorating while armed with a hot glue gun.

With Christmas music playing over the sound system, Mary got crafty. First, she braved the blizzard to harvest the pinecones, sticks, and bits of evergreen that had blown up against the house. Next, she popped popcorn and raided Nick's desk for paper and pens and scissors and string. She gathered art supplies from Mikey's playroom and requisitioned pasta from the pantry. Then, having transformed the dining table into a workstation and assigned tasks to Nick, Mary got to work creating a wreath, garland, and ornaments for the tree. Her host had reluctantly agreed to harvest a blue spruce from his property as soon as the storm abated. For that concession, she mixed up a batch of sugar cookies.

She finally managed to find a crack in his bah-humbug attitude when she started folding paper stars for the tree. Nick proved to be an origami expert. The paper-folding process served to relax him. He made a darling paper dog, and that led the conversation around to pets. She told him about her work with Wags and Walks Rescue and how she came to be traveling the road to Eternity Springs with Angel.

He deflected most of her questions about his son and displayed his detective skills with subtle questions about her life. She found herself talking about Travis. "You call me an elf. Well, I'm absolutely an elf on the shelf." She told Nick about the breakup, and he responded with all the ego-stroking things that a girl liked to hear. Mary could have kissed him.

She wanted to kiss him.

She had wanted to dump the contents of the flour canister on Angel's head when the dog interrupted the almost-kiss moment in the pantry. Too bad her haul of pinecones and evergreens hadn't included any mistletoe. Maybe when they went out to harvest a tree, she could solve that little problem. If not, as a last resort, she did have that fake mistletoe bough in her purse from the Landry and Lawrence Catering Christmas party. Nick wouldn't like it any better than canned snow, but he would need to make do.
